On March 17, 2025, the 2024-25 baseball season officially began for the Cary-Grove Trojans. Under the leadership of first-year head coach Mr. Kyle Williams, CG went on to win the opener 12-6 vs. Palatine.
Throughout the month, they would stay hot, going 4-0 and outscoring opponents by a combined 44-11, punctuated by a 10-3 win over Barrington, which was seen as a monumental win, holding one of the best baseball programs in the state to just three runs. For contrast, the freshmen team lost 11-1 to Barrington the very same day.
After winning regional titles in 2023 and 2024, but falling short in the following rounds, the 2025 squad finally broke through the sectional wall.
In the regional final, they defeated Antioch by a decisive margin, 13-3, in a six-inning “run-rule” victory led by then-senior Keenan Krysh’s three runs and four RBI.
In the super-sectional, they overwhelmed Chicago St. Patrick 9-2 at Wintrust Field to punch a ticket to the state finals in Joliet.
They would finish their season in Slammers Stadium, ultimately falling to Benet Academy (11-6) in the semifinals and Triad (3-1) in the third-place game.
By the time the dust settled, Coach Williams had finished 21-14 with a state appearance.
“We blew our expectations out of the water,” then-Senior Charlie Taczy said. “I think we all had the goal in mind of going to state, but it realistically never was solidified until the end of the season.”
When Coach Williams took over the program, one of his first priorities was reinforcing the culture already established by the team’s senior leaders.
“We were fortunate to have a really strong group of seniors who already had a great culture,” Coach Williams said. “I wanted to build on that and set the expectation for effort, consistency, and working together all year long.”
Williams also emphasized maintaining positive team chemistry throughout the season.
“You perform your best when you’re enjoying what you’re doing and having fun,” he said.
Williams said the season also reshaped how he views leadership. Rather than relying only on team captains or starters, he saw leadership emerge from across the roster – even from players who never stepped onto the field.
“Everyone can be a leader,” Williams said. “We had some really strong leadership contributions from guys who couldn’t even play because they were injured.”
Williams added that building relationships with every player, regardless of their role, helped create a stronger culture throughout the entire team.
The Trojans’ season ultimately ended at Slammers Stadium, but the impact of the run stretched far beyond the final score. In his first year as head coach, Williams helped create a culture built on leadership, effort, and connection across the entire roster.
If the 2025 season proved anything, it’s that when a team believes in that culture, the results can take them further than anyone expected.
