For months now, ICE has been abusing its power and terrorizing people whom they believe are illegal immigrants. According to The Guardian, in 2025 alone, 32 people died in ICE custody, making it the deadliest year in more than two decades.
On February 8th, Super Bowl LX took place. While the game itself was considered very boring, many eyes were on this year’s halftime show, and for a different reason than usual. This year, the popular singer Bad Bunny, who won a Grammy for this year’s best album, was the performer for the show, which is a huge event for millions of people every year.
Many people expected Bad Bunny to address ICE and immigration enforcement because has faced ICE complications before. In his 2025-2026 concert tour, he canceled the U.S. part of his tour because he was afraid ICE would abuse his audience, which is majority Latino.
During his performance at the halftime show, two major points stood out to viewers. The first was when “The only thing more powerful than hate is love” was broadcast on a screen. This was a slightly indirect reference and response to ICE. The second major point appeared on a football, which said, “Together, we are America.”
According to PEW Research Center, Latinos make up around 19.5% of the U.S. population as of July 2023. Bad Bunny’s football saying “Together we are America” displays that America isn’t only made up of people of white ethnicity. It is made of diversity and freedom.
People from all around the world, no matter what ethnicity they are, no matter what they look like, come to America as a place where they can be free. Most of the people that get deported and abused by ICE were in the process of becoming legal residents and becoming an official part of America.
The meaning behind his “The only thing more powerful than hate is love” is that love makes the world a better place, while hate makes it a worse one. Hate creates conflict between different sides that disagree with each other. However, with love, people might still have different opinions, but they can put that aside and still be friends and neighbors.
In conclusion, what ICE is doing is inhumane and we the people can get motivation to stand up to this injustice by watching celebrities and people that we look up to stand up to ICE by themselves.
