Two things are limited to us as human beings. The number of tubs of baconnaise we can carry in our bare hands, and our time. On average, we only get about 28,000 days, which when you think about it isn’t a lot. Taking away sleeping, going to the bathroom, and brushing your teeth, it comes out to just under 20,000 days. Many of us only have less than three-quarters of that left. Therefore, what we do with our time really matters.
I was recently introduced to a method that I will implement this year to maximize my time. Take everything you do, whether it be clubs, hobbies, or mindlessly scrolling on your phone, and rank them. What are bad, good, better, and the best things you can be doing? It may seem simple, but has helped me so far in reevaluating my priorities and making decisions.
For example, procrastination. I once saw a TED talk that likened procrastination to a monkey in your brain that takes control and does whatever it wants, and for me, that monkey is King Kong. Part of my resolution in making the most of my time is to at least bring it down to a gorilla or such. Whenever I find myself watching that or any other informational video for hours, I think to myself, “would it be a better use of my time to work on the essay I haven’t started that is due tomorrow?” Often I think that, and often I agree, but this year my goal is to follow through with it. In the words of some old guy, “Actions speak louder than words”.
Before leaving soon-ish for college and “the future”, one of my main goals is to spend more time with my family, as for me those would fall under the “best” category I set up earlier. However, something I added to my resolution is to actually use that time with my family to the fullest. Like our money (time is money), we want to spend our time both wisely and fully. Instead of spending all your money on baconnaise but then just leaving it in your pantry, actually enjoying it on all of your food.
In 2024, my main goal is to use the most valuable currency we have as humans, baconnaise time, to the fullest. Using it on the most important things, and in a way that can leave me happier and enjoy my life more. I would as well urge you to do the same, and make the most of your time you still have before the planet goes up in flames.
