Sunday, April 7th marked the beginning of a long lived tradition for
highschool seniors: Senior assassin. Senior assassin is a game in which teams of two are given the task of eliminating another team of two while trying to evade a team of assassins.
In order to eliminate your targets, you have to shoot them with a plastic water gun. Each team has from Sunday 11:59 to Saturday 11:59 (1 week) to eliminate their targets and hide from their assassins.
As the name states, only seniors participate in senior assassins. Each team of two comes up with a fun name that is typically water related. Each team gives $10 as a contribution to the cash prize which is won by the team left standing. The number of teams participating determines how much the pot is worth.
This year, 86 teams are playing senior assassin, so the pot is up to $860,
meaning that each team member will take home $430. As far as the ground rules are concerned, no one can be eliminated in their homes, garage, businesses (including gyms), religious buildings/events, inside of workplaces, during sporting events, or at Cary-Grove (parking lot included).
People can be eliminated walking to and from work, sporting events, their house, and in public places. Parking lots (minus Cary-Grove) are free game as well. If your car door is unlocked or your windows are open, you can also be assassinated. While it may seem that there are a lot of rules, it encourages people to be more creative in eliminating their targets out of the game.
Week 1 Results
51/86 teams ELIMINATED (-51 teams)
35 teams moving on to round 2
Quote of the week: Noe Castillo was one of the earliest eliminations in the first round and he had one word to describe his assassination: ignominious. “Getting out this early in the game was like getting picked last in the gym. Nothing could mentally prepare me for two 17 year old highschoolers full on sprinting out of the car, water squirters in hand, spraying me. The level of determination in this game is truly unnoticed. For any future senior assassin participant, always remember: If you think someone wouldn’t wait 2 hours outside of your work to get you out, think again.”
Highlight of week 1: The Brunch Massacre
During the first week of senior assassin, 3 teams were eliminated at one place: The Brunch Cafe in McHenry. One of the students, Abraham Ortega, convinced his friends to rat out his targets, Michelle Z. and Johnny S. Abraham O. found out that not only were his targets going to be at this brunch place, but they were meeting other people in senior assassin. They knew that this would be the perfect opportunity to take out 2 or more teams at one time. They came up with a plan to drive in one car and check if their targets’ cars were at the cafe. Once they confirmed that they were there, they realized that there were other assassins at the cafe who had followed their targets. This meant that at least 3 teams were going to be eliminated. Additionally, one of the participant’s parents worked there as a hostess and told her kid about the influx of CG kids. The parent kept an eye on the kids so that they could let Abraham and the others know when their targets were leaving. The first team to exit the restaurant was Michelle and Johnny. The last assassination was a bit of a surprise. One of the teams (Alexia H.) that had originally planned to stake outside the restaurant, got eliminated, because one of the targets that got assassinated texted Alexia’s assassin. Her assassin made it just in time before she could get her target out.
