The Cary-Grove Drama Department has unveiled a new club called CG One Act Plays. This new club is aimed at people who are interested in drama and want to be in the spring or fall plays/musicals, but are looking to first develop and nurture their theater skills before going to the main stage in the future.
“There is such an excitement and desire to be on stage,” Mrs. Stephanie Sukow, the One Acts Club’s organizer, said. “Looking at 100 students, 100 freshmen in choir, I know that there’s such an excitement around being involved in the performing arts, and this is an additional experience that can help students to learn and grow and reach those goals of someday potentially making musical or being involved in a mainstage show.”
A one-act play, according to Collins Dictionary, is a ‘short play consisting of only one act.’ So, if the club only did one one-act play, with a limited number of people, the club wouldn’t accomplish its goal of preparing a lot of students for the mainstage shows.
“We’ll do a series of one-acts or short scenes to allow as many performers to perform as possible, so almost short stories in play form,” Mrs. Sukow said.
She also explained that students in the club will be taking part in absolutely everything necessary to create a full-blown production, but will only perform for a short time on stage.
“In the one-acts they are going to talk about their own costuming, their own set design, their own directing,” Mrs. Sukow said. “So my goal is to really help students to see all aspects of theater, not just one aspect, and so it’s bringing those things together.”
This club also may be for people who want to do other clubs and activities and can’t commit enough time to truly learn the lines and actions for a two-hour play, but still want to perform on stage and be a part of the fine arts community.
“So many students are involved in so many wonderful activities at CG, and so this is an opportunity for them to participate in something in fine arts but also be able to do other clubs like CG Buddies and Interact and Student Council and all those great things,” Mrs. Sukow said.
“It’s all about celebrating and empowering our students to reach their goals and to do something they love.”
If you want to know more about this club, email Mrs. Sukow or come to the next performance at the newly renovated black box theater in C2 on November 01.
