2016 is off to a good start with animated films, but so far the film that has gained the most attention is Zootopia, Disney’s 55th animated feature. The film has been praised for the characters, the clever and funny storyline, the film’s beautiful landscape, and its theme, which involves two important problems: racial discrimination and stereotypes.

The film is about Zootopia’s first rabbit police officer, Judy Hopps. Ever since she was a kid, Judy had always wanted to became a cop and she tried really hard to. Unfortunately, a lot of people, including the police force, didn’t think she had what it takes, but she didn’t give up because she believed that in Zootopia, anyone can be anything.

She soon gets her chance when a police case involves 14 missing predators, ranging from a giant polar bear to a little otter. Judy has to find the missing otter in 48 hours, otherwise, she will be forced to resign.

Judy knows she can’t do it alone, so she is forced to partner up with a con-artist fox named Nick Wilde, who is the only one who saw where the otter went. They’re in conflict at first, since rabbits and foxes are natural enemies, but soon realize they are not so different after all.

When I first saw the film on March 9th, I thought it was a very powerful film about never giving up on your dreams and trying your best; it turns out it was a lot more than that. The film talks about racial diversity and how everyone is different in their own way, but some people have trouble understanding those differences and accepting them, so they are afraid of them.

They also talk about stereotypes. In one point of the film, Judy believes that all foxes are natural enemies, but she soon discovers that she shouldn’t stereotype predators as wild and vicious because sometimes things are not always what they seem.

What I learned from the film is that life is a little rough sometimes, and we all make mistakes. Everybody is different in some way and the more we understand one another, the more exceptional we will be, but we have to try in order to do it.

No matter what type of animal or human you are, whether you’re big, small, blind, disabled, young, or old, change starts with you. Zootopia is a must-see film for both children and adults and it might inspire you to try everything.
